1861 $3 MS64 PCGS....
Description
1861 Three Dollar, MS64
Luminous Piece
1861 $3 MS64 PCGS. The mintage of the 1861 three dollar
issue was commendable at 5,959 pieces, considering that the onset
of the Civil War was upon the nation. Circulation of the issue was
scant, as the government later halted specie payments, and gold
hoarding became prevalent. The resumption of payments then saw
widespread melting and exporting by bankers and bullion brokers,
further diminishing the supply.Luminous gold luster garnishes this example with no notable abrasions that would detract from the appeal. The strike is largely strong but shows some minor weakness along Liberty's hair. At Gem Uncirculated the issue becomes conditionally scarce. PCGS Population: 14 in 64 (1 in 64+), 4 finer (3/26).(Registry values: N4719)
