    Description

1861 Gold Three Dollar, Sharp MS64
    Rarely Seen So Fine

1861 $3 MS64 PCGS. In their Encyclopedia (2008), Garrett and Guth write of the 1861 three dollar gold piece: "Mint State examples are ... rare, with a small cluster around the MS-62 to MS-64 grades." The certified population data confirms that this assessment remains true today, and the frequency of auction appearances supports the consensus. This Choice example is high-end for the issue, a conditional rarity. Its eye appeal is characterized by rich straw-gold luster with a suggestion of semiprooflike reflectivity in the fields, as well as the razor-sharp strike which is most impressive on the wreath bow. A few stray lines in the fields are the chief grade-limiting factor, as no individually significant abrasions occur. An appealing example of this popular wartime issue. Population: 10 in 64, 3 finer (8/15).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 7K5N, PCGS# 7982)

    Weight: 5.02 grams
