Description
1862 Three Dollar, AU Details
Scarce Civil War-Era Piece
1862 $3 -- Altered Surfaces -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. The
1862 issue produced just 5,750 pieces and today is a conditional
rarity in high-end grades with only 49 Mint State pieces reported
at PCGS (7/25). This AU-level three dollar has a bright wheat-gold
patina. Well-struck, it shows softness on the central devices but
has good detail on the outer legends and wreaths. Heavy die
striations running vertically are present and are typical of the
issue (as struck). A thorough cleaning has left a shiny, granular
finish and the abrasions consistent with AU examples appear
smoothed or polished, all which contributed to the Altered Surfaces
designation from PCGS. Even so, it is an attractive gold piece and
with limited Mint State availability, AU-level pieces are desirable
alternatives.From The JGC Collection.
