    1863 Three Dollar, MS63
    Alternating Frosty and Reflective Textures

1863 $3 MS63 PCGS. An even 5,000 circulation strikes were made of the 1863 three dollar gold, but the series saw mintages plummet soon after, and as early as this date the series appeared doomed in the long run -- as turned out to be the case, despite the eruptions of 1874 and 1878. This Select example boasts the usual two-part texture, reflective in some areas combined with mint frost in others. Die striations heighten the reflectiveness in the obverse fields, and even, light orange-gold patina prevails on both sides. Bold die clashing appears on each side. Minimal abrasions appear, all small and inconspicuous. Population: 6 in 63, 19 finer (9/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25MJ, PCGS# 7984)
