Description
1863 Three Dollar Gold, MS67
Challenging War-Year Rarity
1863 $3 MS67 PCGS. CAC. Monetary policy during the Civil War
was confused and in disarray. Uncertainty about the intrinsic value
of gold and silver, politics -- and, of course, the war --
continued to override concerns about shortages in domestic
circulating coinage. Aside from the workhorse double eagle, most
gold coins were minted in small quantities with no intention of
using them to ease the shortage. Mintages of the smaller gold coins
were earmarked for export or, in some cases, simply placed into
storage with the melting pots beckoning.Of all gold issues for the year, the 1863 three dollar gold was among the most sparsely produced with just 5,000 business strikes minted. Probably, the public did not care much because the three dollar was an unpopular denomination (many considered it redundant when compared with the more popular quarter eagles).
As a result, few high-grade 1863 three dollar examples exist today, with an estimated survival of less than 50 pieces in Mint State. Of these, few can match the sparkling appeal or lofty technical grade of this Superb Gem. It is one of only five graded MS67 by PCGS and NGC combined, with two finer by NGC (11/13).
Rich honey-gold color shows touches of rose-red, violet, and vivid yellow-gold highlights on the obverse. The reverse is similarly toned with a dappling of orange-gold. As with most Mint State specimens of this date, die clashing exists on both sides of the coin, but without detriment to the quality of strike or the lustrous appeal. The reflective surfaces are remarkably free of abrasions or post-mint contact.
