    Description

    Near-Mint 1865 Three Dollar Gold
    Rare Early Series Issue

1865 $3 AU58 NGC. The 1865 three dollar gold piece had a limited mintage of 1,140 pieces, and collectors saved few examples. Q. David Bowers estimates 70-100 specimens survive today in all grades, and high-grade pieces are quite rare. The elusive nature of this issue was recognized at an early date, and the example in the Randall Collection (Woodward, 6/1885), lot 1025, was characterized as "very rare."
The present coin is a well-detailed piece, with just a touch of wear on the high points of the feathers and the ribbon knot. The surfaces are semiprooflike, with bright greenish-gold color. Only minor, grade-consistent contact marks occur on either side. Census: 17 in 58, 21 finer (2/11).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 7K5S, PCGS# 7986)
