    Near-Mint State 1865 Three Dollar
    Low-Mintage Issue of 1,140 Pieces

1865 $3 AU58 PCGS. CAC. By the climactic fourth and final year of the nation's Civil War in 1865, the mintage of the three dollar gold piece had sunk to a meager 1,140 circulation strikes, the series-low total until the 1880-dated coins, at 1,000 pieces. David Akers wrote in 1979 of the date that he had seen only "two Mint State pieces" -- yet the current combined NGC and PCGS population data show 31 submissions in Mint State grades. Who is right? It seems significant that there is a large cadre of AU58 submissions at both services -- 15 at PCGS, 18 at NGC -- duplications trying to jump the Mint State hurdle?
This near-Mint example displays deep orange-gold color with significant quantities of luster surrounding the devices on each side. The surfaces are obviously original and well but not fully struck. Only a few scattered light, inoffensive marks appear, in keeping with the grade. Population: 15 in 58, 10 finer (9/11).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 7K5S, PCGS# 7986)

    Weight: 5.02 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
