Elusive Near-Mint 1865 Three Dollar Gold

1865 $3 AU58 PCGS. Scarcely more than a decade after the three dollar gold series' introduction, the 1865 mintage was a measly 1,140 business strikes during the last year of the Civil War. This was a low-water mark that would endure another 15 years, until 1880. Probably less than 100 examples survive in all grades. Although NGC and PCGS combined have seen more than three dozen "submission events" in Mint State, the total number of different Mint State pieces may be one-half or only one-third of that total, perhaps a dozen to 18 separate pieces. This near-Mint coin has almost all of its original luster remaining, with just a whisper of high-point wear separating it from a considerably finer grade. Delightful orange-gold coloration and a paucity of mentionable marks are big pluses. Many collectors prefer nice, problem-free AU58 coins such as the present piece to technically Uncirculated coins in MS60 or MS61, which by definition will have some surface problems. A lovely example of this elusive issue.(Registry values: N2998)
