Description

Challenging Mint State 1865 Three Dollar

1865 $3 MS61 NGC. The 1865 three dollar is one of the scarcest dates, regardless of condition, in an already challenging series. Of course with a puny mintage of 1,140 pieces, the aforementioned fact is no surprise. With less than 100 examples believed to be extant in all grades, we can only imagine what the auction hammer prices would be for this issue if more people collected three dollar gold pieces by date. In Mint State condition, the availability of 1865 threes is even more bleak. To make this point clear, we note that NGC has certified eight pieces at the MS61 level, with only 12 listed at higher grades (8/08). The lovely peach-gold example offered here boasts a solid strike and ample eye appeal.(Registry values: N4719)
