Description

1865 Three Dollar, Semiprooflike MS66
Seldom-Seen Low-Mintage Issue

1865 $3 MS66 PCGS. Any gold coin dated 1865 has added significance for gold collectors as well as for those who specialize in Civil War dated coins of all kinds. Gold coin production from the Philadelphia Mint was extremely low for every denomination in 1865. The only gold coins with substantial circulation were found on the West coast, where the San Francisco Mint struck enough coins for their regional needs. Elsewhere, the meager gold output was either hoarded or never seen in circulation at all.

For three dollar gold enthusiasts, 1865 is among the rarest dates in the entire series. It is especially elusive in Mint State, with only an estimated two dozen Uncirculated examples thought to exist. It is rare in the absolute sense, too, with just 1,140 business strikes produced in this final Civil War year. Perhaps no more than 150 pieces remain in any grade.

Of the few survivors, this Akers Collection specimen is an outstanding condition rarity and ranks high among the finest known of the date. Cameolike contrast and deep, red-gold toning make it an incredible example to view. The richness of the gold color vibrates with reflectivity and swirling mint luster. Bronze-gold accents give depth and a look of antique-gold originality that can be best appreciated by in-hand viewing.

As expected with this high-grade coin, the strike is sharp and full. In particular, the hair detail is excellent on the portrait without any of the central weakness sometimes seen with this series. No evidence of die clashing is seen -- again, a welcome attribute not often encountered with three dollar gold from the 1860s. Virtually no abrasions of any significance are visible. This is a truly rare and memorable Premium Gem. Population: 2 in 66, 0 finer (11/13).
