Splendid 1866 Three Dollar, AU58
1866 $3 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Bowers (2005) calls the 1866 a rarity at all levels and estimates that only 200 or so pieces exist in any grade, with only 25 to 40 Mint State examples. Charming orange-gold patina overlies the lightly hairlined surfaces. Powerful luster radiates throughout and enhances the eye appeal. This boldly struck specimen is one of just 4,000 coins minted. PCGS has certified a mere 33 pieces finer, some of which are undoubtedly resubmissions (8/08).(Registry values: N1793)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25MM, PCGS# 7987, GSID# 8639)
