Description

Appealing Mint State 1866 Three Dollar Gold

1866 $3 MS60 NGC. The post-Civil War mintage of the 1866 three dollar gold was a skimpy 4,000 pieces, and today the average certified survivor grades only AU53 or thereabouts. Mint State examples are available, but seldom seen above MS62. This coin has surprisingly strong appeal for an MS60-graded piece, with strong luster and pretty tinges of peripheral peach against yellow-gold centers. The numerous abrasions appearing on both sides determine the grade, but the piece is commendable nonetheless.(Registry values: N2998)
