Description

Attractive and Scarce 1868 Three Dollar, MS63

1868 $3 MS63 PCGS. Scarce in any grade, the 1868 had a mintage of just 4,850 pieces. Although this number is higher than some of the later issues in the series, the 1868 is essentially on par with those years in terms of present-day survivors. In The United States $3 Gold Pieces, Bowers (2005) speaks of the rarity of the 1868 and estimates that between 70 and 90 Mint State coins exist, mostly in MS60 to MS62.
This yellow-gold representative exhibits fantastic satiny luster throughout the fields, which are nearly prooflike. A couple of tiny blemishes are noted at the top of the obverse. Scattered abrasions define the grade, but none merit individual mention. A sharply struck piece with impressive eye appeal. Population: 25 in 63, 19 finer (8/08).(Registry values: N4719)
