    1870 Three Dollar Gold, MS63
    Rare Issue in Mint State

1870 $3 MS63 PCGS. Mint records indicate only 3,500 business-strike three dollar gold pieces were struck in 1870, accompanied by an even smaller mintage of 25 proofs. As might be expected with such a small production, many business strikes have prooflike surfaces. Fortunately, the leaf to the left of the date on the reverse of the business-strike die was largely effaced in the preparation process, making it easy to differentiate between proofs and regular issues.

The present coin is an impressive Select specimen, with well-detailed design elements that show just a vestigial remnant of the leaf to the left of the date. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces are lightly marked and exhibit a mix of satiny mint luster and prooflike reflectivity in the fields. The eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 10 in 63 (1 in 63+), 4 finer (7/19).(Registry values: N4719)
