Description
1872 Three Dollar, MS64
Condition Census Rarity
Beautifully Reflective Fields
1872 $3 MS64 PCGS. Only 2,000 three dollar gold pieces were
struck in 1872. Such a low mintage was typical for the latter half
of the series, although dates from the 1880s were widely saved,
making them readily collectible today despite their modest
production totals. The same cannot be said of the 1872, which is
today a scarce date in Uncirculated condition and decidedly rare as
fine as MS64. PCGS and NGC combined report just eight coins in MS64
or MS64+, with a lone MS65+ PCGS coin finer (8/25).The current near-Gem displays deep orange-gold color throughout semiprooflike fields and bold, frosty devices. Appreciable cameo contrast appears on each side, and there are only the most minute of abrasions to prevent Gem classification. We have previously handled only two distinct 1872 coins in MS64, comprising five auction appearances over the last three decades. The current coin is a monumental offering for the advanced Registry or type collector. Population: 4 in 64 (1 in 64+), 1 finer (8/25).(Registry values: N4719)
