    1873 Closed 3 Three Dollar Gold, AU53
    Notable Philadelphia Rarity
    No Official Mintage

1873 $3 Closed 3 AU53 PCGS. The Closed 3 three dollar gold is one of those enigmatic issues where there is no mint record of any circulation strikes, yet they exist to the extent that any collector, with dedicated searching and a sufficient budget, can obtain this challenging issue in high circulated grades. Mint State examples are rare, with seven to 11 pieces estimated to survive, according to the Bowers' reference.

This gleaming, mostly prooflike AU53 coin easily approaches Choice status, housed in an old green label PCGS holder. Smooth and attractive surfaces are minimally abraded, while a sharp strike weakens only slightly at the centers and at the high points of the wreath. Pleasing honey-gold color and plentiful mint luster provides strong eye appeal. Population: 7 in 53, 52 finer (7/19).
