    Rare 1873 Closed 3 Three Dollar MS60

1873 $3 Closed 3 MS60 NGC. In a challenging series known for numerous rarities, the 1873 Closed 3 is among the most elusive Three Dollar issues as a business strike and is certainly the most enigmatic. No official records indicate the production of a business strike 1873. Based on the number of survivors, one must surmise that at least 200-300 pieces were produced and we can speculate that their omission from mint records was probably an oversight of an early (January) delivery. When seen, the typical 1873 Closed 3 generally shows a modest amount of circulation and is almost always prooflike. This Uncirculated representative is mildly reflective with numerous light abrasions in the fields. A squiggly mark in front of Liberty's brow is possibly mint-caused, but several shallow scratches above and behind the portrait occurred after striking. Minor striking weakness is most noticeable on the bow of the wreath.

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
