    Description

PCGS 1873 Closed 3 AU 58. The Closed 3 1873 is one of the great rarities in the three-dollar series. Its mintage was unrecorded for some unknown reason but by extrapolating from the number of survivors seen, Akers estimates that somewhere in the range of 200-300 pieces were struck--an impressively low mintage. The Closed 3 coins are generally considered to be originals while the Open 3s are most likely restrikes. Most Closed 3s are circulated to some extent, like this coin, and it appears that only 1 piece may be extant in strict mint condition. This is a clean, problem-free coin that shows no distracting marks. The fields have a hint of semi-prooflikeness as usual and, also as usual, the strike is somewhat ill-defined on the highpoints of the design. Deep orange-gold color. Trends $6,750 in AU 50, $16,500 in MS 60. (NGC ID# 25MW, PCGS# 7995)
