    Description

1873 Closed 3 MS 61 PCGS. The Closed 3 1873 is one of the great rarities in the three-dollar series. Its mintage was unrecorded for some unknown reason but by extrapolating from the number of survivors seen, Akers estimates that somewhere in the range of 200-300 pieces were struck--an impressively low mintage. The Closed 3 coins are generally considered to be originals while the Open 3s are most likely restrikes. Most Closed 3s are circulated to some extent. As of this writing (4/95), PCGS has certified two mint state examples, this one being the finest. This is a bright, lustrous coin that shows the normal amount of tiny contact marks one would expect to encounter on an MS 61. The fields are semi-prooflike, as usual, and also as usual, the strike is somewhat ill-defined on the highpoints of the design. Attractive orange-gold color. (NGC ID# 25MW, PCGS# 7995)
