Description

Sharp Gem 1874 Three Dollar Gold

1874 $3 MS65 NGC. The Mint Act of 1873, among many other important measures, provided for the melting and recoinage of old gold coins, resulting in the large production of 1874 three dollar gold pieces. The 41,800 coins produced puts the issue third behind the generous 1878 emission (82,304 pieces) and the first-year 1854 total (138,618 coins). While Mint State examples of the 1874 can be found up to MS64, Gems such as the present coin are highly elusive and see intense demand from type collectors competing for the few specimens available. This coin is one of only 13 so certified at NGC, with a single coin finer (10/09). Intense luster shines forth from bright yellow-gold surfaces that are remarkably free of abrasions, large or small. A small reddish alloy spot on the obverse near the bottom of the ER in AMERICA provides an identifier. The bold strike is a definite plus, adding much to the considerable eye appeal.(Registry values: N4719)
