1877 Three Dollar Gold, AU Details
    Key Issue in the Series

1877 $3 -- Altered Surfaces -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Significant flash and prooflike character remain on the surfaces of this rare three dollar gold piece, certified as "Altered Surfaces" although the reason for the designation is neither mentioned nor obvious. The reverse is nearly entirely prooflike and lustrous, while the obverse is reflective at the margins with luster. There is no apparent repair from jewelry removal or other overt surface manipulation. Just 1,468 pieces were minted and perhaps fewer than 125 pieces survive. This example retains nice details and in-hand eye appeal.(Registry values: N2998)
