Description

Seldom-Seen 1877 Three Dollar, AU53

1877 $3 AU53 NGC. The puny mintage of three dollar gold pieces in 1877 amounted to only 1,468 business strikes, among the lowest in the series up to that point. The Bowers denomination reference calls it a key to the series, "in many ways comparable to the 1865. Probably no more than 100 circulated examples exist, plus a dozen or fewer in Mint State."
This piece has much semiprooflikeness still evident on the fields on both sides, with orange-gold coloration overall and a trace of reddish patina around the device edges. A few parallel slide marks appear on the cheek, but do little to dampen the appeal. Census: 4 in 53, 18 finer (8/09).(Registry values: N2998)
