    Description

    1877 Three Dollar, MS61 Prooflike
    Low-Mintage Issue
From the Walter H. Childs Collection

1877 $3 MS61 Prooflike NGC. Ex: Childs Collection. An impressive specimen that shows lightly abraded surfaces. However, this example also shows excellent cameo contrast with fully mirrored fields and lustrous devices. Both sides are brilliant and light yellow with excellent eye appeal. Only 1,468 circulation strikes and 30 proofs were minted in 1877. Many of the survivors have prooflike surfaces due to the low mintage. There was little time for the die polish to diminish during that production run. NGC has certified 37 examples of this issue in all grades, and nearly a quarter of those are designated prooflike. Two deliveries of circulation strikes are reported, apparently from two different obverse dies. This example has only the top half of J.B.L. visible on the neck truncation, a feature that Bowers and Winter describe for one die used for proofs. Possibly once described as a proof, this example is clearly a prooflike business strike. Census: 2 in 61 Prooflike, 3 finer (7/13).
Ex: Walter H. Childs Collection (Bowers and Merena, 8/1999), lot 672.
