Description
Mint State 1878 Three Dollar
1878 $3 MS61 NGC. A nicely struck yellow-gold type coin with good luster and a lack of consequential abrasions. The reverse is lightly die doubled, a feature best distinguished on the right edges of the right-side cotton leaves. The mintage of the 1878 is higher than surrounding dates because Treasury officials believed some would redeem paper money for gold coin that year. The anticipated demand was never realized due to the convenience and familiarity of Federal folding money.(Registry values: N1793)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25MZ, PCGS# 8000, GSID# 8649)
