Description

1878 Three Dollar, MS65+ CAC
Honey-Gold Luster

1878 $3 MS65+ NGC. CAC. Variety 2. Beyond the inaugural year of the denomination in 1854, 1878 boasted an astonishing mintage of 82,304 coins. The mintage, coupled with the high survivorship, has led the date to become a popular type coin for collectors. This present piece displays attractive honey-gold luster and subtle deepening tones within the wreath. The strike is excellent with a well-defined wreath bow and the left cotton boll, though the right boll demonstrates the expected strike weakness. There are some largely negligible marks, but otherwise the coin is immaculately preserved. Despite the high survivorship for the date, obtaining an example that surpasses Gem Uncirculated is a difficult undertaking. CAC: 58 in 65, 19 finer (3/26).(Registry values: N4719)
