Description

1878 Three Dollar Gold, MS65
Exemplary Gold Type Coin

1878 $3 MS65 NGC. The three dollar denomination was never struck in great quantity, but mintages were particularly low after 1859, with the exception of the 1874 and 1878. Likely, Mint officials believed that the three dollar piece would return to circulation once the paper dollar achieved parity with its gold equivalent. However, the public had become accustomed to using paper money, and where gold coin was used, the half eagle through double eagle offered greater convenience. The scarcity of the three dollar denomination ensures demand for the 1878, especially in the lofty Gem grade. This is a lustrous yellow-gold representative that boasts an intricate strike and only inconsequential field grazes. NGC has graded 64 numerically finer examples (12/25).
