Fantastic Gem 1878 Three Dollar Gold
1878 $3 MS65 PCGS. An outstanding Gem representative of this immensely popular three dollar gold type issue. The strike is bold overall, with only slight softness visible at the bow on the reverse, and the richly colored honey-gold fields offer the potent, swirling luster that defines the best examples of the date. Though the 1878 three dollar gold piece was hoarded from the time of its release and thousands of Mint State survivors are extant, by the MS65 level, the population thins out considerably. As for even finer examples, PCGS has certified just 68 such pieces (4/09).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25MZ, PCGS# 8000, GSID# 8649)
