Description

Fully Struck Gem 1878 Three Dollar

1878 $3 MS65 PCGS. The last of the Big Three Indian Princess three dollar gold issues usually chosen for type -- along with the first-year 1854 and the midseries 1874 -- the 1878 is memorable both for its large mintage of 82,304 circulation strikes and its PCGS number, 8000. All are nonetheless relatively elusive at the Gem level and the subject of high demand. The average certified example is a hair under MS60. This Gem 1878 displays thick mint frost and generous luster. Original, deep reddish patina shows faint lilac accents. Close examination shows a few pinprick marks, none singularly detracting, and the strike is full, even on the bowknot. PCGS has seen 69 submissions finer (1/13).
