    Description

    1878 Three Dollar, MS65
    Reddish-Orange With Olive Accents

1878 $3 MS65 PCGS. The 1878 three dollar gold was the last of three great high-mintage issues struck during the series' run from 1854 through 1889. In the case of the 1878, the Mint struck large numbers of the issue anticipating a great demand for the long-awaited "parity" between gold coins, silver coins, and paper currency which was scheduled to occur at the end of the year, marking the first time that the three mediums of exchange would be freely interchangeable at banks since the start of the Civil War. In fact, when parity was actually achieved in late 1878, there was no increased demand for gold coins. When the American populace realized that they could exchange their paper currency for gold or silver coins anytime they wished, they chose the more-convenient medium of paper. (This is the same reason why one dollar Presidential and Susan B. Anthony coins do not circulate today; they never will, unless one dollar bills are discontinued.)

This Gem 1878 three shows deep reddish-orange tints on both sides with accents of olive and copper. The few marks are scattered and small. This piece offers much eye appeal and would make a great addition to a high-grade type set.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25MZ, PCGS# 8000)
