    Description

    1878 Three Dollar, MS66
    Copious Luster and Eye Appeal

1878 $3 MS66 PCGS. Although the three archetypes of the three dollar series -- the 1854, 1874, and 1878 -- are broadly lumped together as type coins, they each possess rather distinct differences. The 1854 is the first-year issue and struck in what was by far the largest amount of the entire series. It is also a one-year type with the much smaller DOLLARS in the denomination, and in the highest Mint State grades, it was saved in relatively smaller quantities than the later issues. The 1874's mintage was about half that of the 1878, and the latter accounts for many of the Premium Gem survivors of this type available to collectors today -- a fortunate occurrence. Two dates, the 1878 and 1888, account for more than half of all the Premium Gems certified by PCGS.

This is a stunning MS66 example of the 1878. Copious luster accompanies surfaces that are virtually mark-free, largely deep orange with accents of lilac scattered on each side. Type collectors will take a good, longing look at this coin. Population: 65 in 66 (2 in 66+), 6 finer (4/14).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25MZ, PCGS# 8000)

    Weight: 5.02 grams
