Description
Alluring 1879 Three Dollar, AU58
1879 $3 AU58 NGC. Beginning with the 1879 issue, the Treasury realized that the three dollar gold coin was unnecessary, and its mintage was dramatically reduced. A mere 3,000 examples were minted in 1879. Many three dollar pieces sat in the Philadelphia Mint vault and were melted after the denomination was discontinued, which means that the mintages are usually higher than the actual distribution. Lemon-gold color drapes the minimally abraded surfaces of this scarce specimen. The impressive, semiprooflike fields radiate luster. An exciting example of this low-mintage issue. From The Jerry Kochel Collection.(Registry values: N1793)
