    Reddish-Tinted 1879 Three Dollar, MS64+

1879 $3 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. Q. David Bowers writes in his series reference that the 1879 three dollar gold issue, appearing in the year that parity (or interexchangeability) was achieved between gold, silver, and paper currency for the first time since the Civil War, "signals the beginning of the end for $3 gold coins." It became apparent to Treasury officials that the general public was "not going to exchange significant amounts of paper bills for gold coins, and in any event this denomination had never been popular." An even 3,000 circulation strikes were produced, and several hundred survive today in Mint State, mostly lower-grade examples. This MS64+ piece displays even, light, reddish-tinted surfaces. The fields show the usual mixture of cartwheel and reflectivity, a finish that is almost unique to this series. The strike is sharp throughout, with consistent definition on the wreath and bow on the reverse. Minimal abrasions are in accord with the near-Gem grade. PCGS has seen two examples in 64+, with 43 finer (9/12).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25N2, PCGS# 8001)
