Beautiful 1879 Three Dollar, MS64 Prooflike
1879 $3 MS64 Prooflike NGC. Despite its low mintage of 3,000 circulation strikes, the 1879 three dollar gold piece is represented by a relatively large number of Mint State examples. Indeed, NGC and PCGS have certified well over 600 Uncirculated specimens. Coins with the Prooflike designation are an entirely different matter. NGC gives this classification to only 26 coins. The apricot-gold surfaces of this near-Gem exhibit well struck devices and appreciable field-motif contrast at various angles. Scattered light marks preclude Gem status, yet still highly attractive. Census: 12 in 64 Prooflike, 1 finer (9/09).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25N2, PCGS# 78001)
