Description

1879 Three Dollar, MS64 Prooflike
Popular Low-Mintage Issue

1879 $3 MS64 Prooflike PCGS. The 1879 is much scarcer than its 1878 predecessor. The mintage was just 3,000 pieces. Contemporary dealers set aside a few hundred Uncirculated pieces, long since distributed to collectors. The present example has the appearance of a cameo proof, as it boasts radiant devices and moderately reflective fields. Careful inspection reveals a couple of minor field hairlines that limit the grade. As of (9/19), PCGS has certified three examples as Prooflike, one each in the MS63, MS63+, and MS64 grades.
