Description

1879 Three Dollar Gold, MS66+
Sole Finest at CAC, Ex: Pogue

1879 $3 MS66+ PCGS. CAC. Ex: D. Brent Pogue Collection. The 1879 is not among the dates typically considered plentiful in high grade. Only 3,000 pieces were struck, and it is far scarcer overall than the immediately preceding 1878 issue. That said, a number of examples were preserved at the time of issue, and 1879 coins are usually collectible in MS64 and lower grades. It is in MS65 where the 1879 becomes scarce, and in higher grades it is rare. This high-end premium Gem is within the Condition Census for the issue, and it is the sole finest example of the date endorsed by CAC. The quality is simply incredible. Shimmering, frosty luster blends with the subtle reflectivity in the fields, delivering an exceptional degree of eye appeal on this piece. Lovely peach-gold, orange, mint-green, and light lilac hues coexist across each side. The strike is razor-sharp. Few three dollar gold pieces of any date are as attractive. Population: 8 in 66 (3 in 66+), 1 finer. CAC: 1 in 66, 0 finer (2/25).
