    Description

    1879 Three Dollar, MS66
    Only One Coin Certified Finer

1879 $3 MS66 PCGS. The year 1879 was a watershed for the three dollar gold denomination. The powers-that-be recognized that the three dollar coins were unnecessary and unwanted in the national economy, so only limited business-strike mintages were produced each year from 1879 onward. A meager total of 3,000 examples was struck in 1879, and many of these coins were never distributed and melted in later years. Fortunately, the survival rate of the remaining coins was high, because they seldom circulated. After the denomination was cancelled in 1889, numismatic demand for three dollar coins caused dealers to scour the holdings that had accumulated in bank vaults over the years, ensuring a supply of Mint State examples for collectors. Accordingly, the 1879 three dollar gold piece can be located easily in lower Mint State grades, but it is a prime condition rarity at the MS66 level.

This delightful Premium Gem exhibits sharply detailed design elements throughout and the impeccably preserved yellow-gold surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster. A few subtle hints of orange and rose patina add to the outstanding eye appeal. Population: 6 in 66, 1 finer (1/15).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25N2, PCGS# 8001)
