    1880 Three Dollar Gold, MS62
    Semiprooflike Fields

1880 $3 MS62 PCGS. By the dawn of the 1880s, the three dollar gold piece had fallen into disuse among the general public. Nevertheless, the Philadelphia Mint would remain loyal to the denomination through 1889 and a steady, if limited, stream of coins would emerge from the presses until the end of the decade. With a paltry mintage of 1,000 business strikes, the 1880 is one of the more desirable issues from this decade. The present coin displays a modest prooflike finish with noticeable reflectivity at certain angles. The color is a curious mixture of copper-gold and orange-gold shades. Lightly marked, as befits the grade, with powerfully defined features.
