Description

Lustrous, Elusive Near-Gem 1880 Three Dollar

1880 $3 MS64 NGC. An even 1,000 coins were made of this issue from the last decade of the Indian Princess three dollar series, which even by the time this piece was produced was looking more and more to be an anachronism. Bowers' reference on the series notes that the 1880 issue "stand high in the rarity sweepstakes. Mint State coins are very elusive and circulated examples are the second rarest of the decade (behind 1884)." The surfaces on this piece show lovely, highly lustrous, golden-orange color with occasional lilac interspersed. The Indian princess's cheek is clean, but a couple of small ticks in the obverse field may prevent an even finer grade. The reverse appears free of singular abrasions. Census: 49 in 64, 23 finer (10/09).(Registry values: N4719)
