    Description

1880 Three Dollar Gold Piece, MS64
    Only 1,000 Pieces Struck

1880 $3 MS64 NGC. According to Mint records, only 1,000 business-strike three dollar gold pieces were struck in 1880, making the issue scarce-to-rare in all grades. The low mintage was recognized by early 20th century coin dealer Thomas Elder, who made a specialty of three dollar gold pieces and marketed several hoards over the years. In lot 975 of his May 1937 catalog of the Wheeler, Von Lieven, and Ross Collections he reported:

"1880. Brilliant Unc. (AD-04). Note - at that time I sold Ben Green several hundreds of $3s from 1879 to 1880. This may be one of that lot. A very small coinage. Not common today."

Fortunately for present-day collectors a number of high-quality coins have survived, including the present Choice example. This coin exhibits sharply detailed design elements and the vivid greenish-gold surfaces show prooflike reflectivity and few signs of contact. Census: 38 in 64 (3 in 64+, 4 in 64 ), 21 finer (1/14).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25N3, PCGS# 8002)

    Weight: 5.02 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
