Description

Delightful 1880 Three Dollar, MS65

1880 $3 MS65 NGC. With a mintage of just 1,000 business strikes, the 1880 is one of the rarer three dollar gold issues, yet its current market price levels only exceed that of common dates by a little over 50%. The denomination stopped circulating a few years earlier, so survival rates are higher for the final decade. Still, the 1880 is known only to the extent of one or two dozen Gem specimens. This piece has frosty yellow surfaces with few blemishes on either side. The fields still retain some reflectivity, creating a slight cameo appearance. The obverse has a heavy orange spot at IB in LIBERTY, serving to identify this example in the future. Census: 16 in 65, 5 finer (8/09).(Registry values: N4719)
