Description

1880 Three Dollar, MS65
Conditionally Scarce Issue
Exceptional Eye Appeal

1880 $3 MS65 PCGS. A few collectors of the era recognized the low mintage of the 1880 three dollar issue and were savvy enough to set aside several high-grade examples. In fact, PCGS reports an unusually high 85% of the certified population in Mint State. The challenge for the small issue of only 1,000 strikes has been exacerbated due to attrition, as noted by Q. David Bowers and Doug Winter in The United States $3 Gold Pieces: "Henry Chapman stated that many remained at the Mint and were later melted."
Gem quality pieces are scarce and the 1880 is seldom seen any finer, as PCGS reports only four examples in Premium Gem (the highest certified as of 3/26). This exceptional Gem displays lustrous honey-gold patina on semireflective fields that flash with faint undertones of olive under light. The coruscating surfaces and sharply struck devices produce a dynamic visual presentation. Magnification reveals a few tiny field nicks that account for the grade.
