    Description

    1881 Three Dollar Gold, MS63
Lowest Reported Mintage in the Series

1881 $3 MS63 NGC. The 1881 three dollar gold had the lowest reported mintage of circulation strikes in the entire series (which bars the unreported 1870-S and 1873 pieces), at 500 coins, and would maintain that title even if the 54 proofs recorded for the year were added. The proofs were struck from a different reverse die, showing the date tilting up. Despite the prooflike surfaces this piece is clearly a business strike, with the diagnostic level date and digits that align between the letters of DOLLARS. Bold die clashing also appears on the reverse, which would be an extremely unusual occurrence for an acknowledged proof. Deep orange-gold color and only scattered contact marks add to the broad appeal. Census: 8 in 63, 4 finer (3/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25N4, PCGS# 8003)

    Weight: 5.02 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
