    Description

    MS63 1881 Three--Lowest Mintage in Series

1881 $3 MS63 PCGS. CAC. The 1881 three dollar is one of the scarcest in the series. Of the 40 issues produced, this date is one of only seven with a recorded population of under 100 pieces at PCGS (11/08). Of course with a mintage of only 500 coins--the lowest in the entire series--this is not surprising. Dave Bowers and Doug Winter, in their United States $3 Gold Pieces (2005), estimate that between 100 to 150 business strike 1881 threes have survived in all grades. The same authors suggest that only 20 to 30 of the extant population are true Mint State pieces.
This Select Uncirculated three displays red-gold coloration with pleasing reflectivity in the fields. A couple of minor copper toning spots are noted on the T of LIBERTY and above the E of AMERICA on the obverse, with similar patches on the reverse below the 3 of the denomination and on the upper left (facing) wreath. The spots are common to the issue are the result of improper alloying. Population: 7 in 63, 5 finer (11/08).
