Reflective Near-Gem 1882 Three Dollar

1882 $3 MS64 PCGS. CAC. This last-decade entry in the three dollar gold lineup had a smallish emission, like all such, of only 1,500 business strikes, but quite a few nice pieces survive. This indicates that collectors of the day were aware of the series' numerous low-mintage issues, likely anticipating its demise and squirreling away a few nice specimens for posterity.
The present near-Gem example offers devices that are uniformly sharp, over brightly reflective fields that are, unsurprisingly, prooflike, with strong cameo contrast present on both sides. Bright yellow-gold surfaces show a moderate number of hairlines in the fields. A much more difficult issue at the next grade level. Population: 24 in 64, 10 finer (5/10).(Registry values: N4719)
