    Description

    1882 Three Dollar, MS64+
    Low-Mintage Gold Issue

1882 $3 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. Only 1,500 business-strike three dollar gold pieces were struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1882, all delivered in a single group on December 23 of that year. A small mintage of 76 proofs were also struck and delivered at intervals throughout the year. Because the regular-issue mintage was so small, most examples seen have prooflike surfaces, causing much confusion for early catalogers. Fortunately, the dies for the business-strike coins show a crescent-shaped remnant of an undertype 2 above the final digit in the date, making it easy for present-day numismatists to tell the issues apart.

The coin offered here is an attractive high-end Choice example, with well-detailed design elements and well-preserved orange-gold surfaces. The surfaces show the typical prooflike reflectivity of this issue and eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 39 in 64 (15 in 64+), 12 finer (3/16).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25N5, PCGS# 8004)

    Weight: 5.02 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
