    Description

    Near-Gem 1882 Three Dollar
    Highly Reflective Surfaces

1882 $3 MS64 PCGS. By 1882, the U.S. Mint manufactured small-denomination gold coins -- quarter eagles and half eagles -- in the millions of pieces, to the detriment of double eagles and the long-since-unneeded three dollar denomination, whose paltry emission was 1,500 business strikes. the Mint State survivors are unsurprisingly (but delightfully) prooflike to semiprooflike in many instances, as on the present near-Gem, which displays ample prooflike qualities. Rich reddish-orange color is augmented by tinges of greenish-hazel near the rims. This piece is well-struck, and only a few tiny ticks and scrapes away from the Gem level.
