    1882 Three Dollar Gold, MS64+
    Important Low-Mintage Issue

1882 $3 MS64+ PCGS. Demand for the three dollar gold pieces waned as time went on late in the 19th century as it did for the gold dollars. Just 23,000 circulation strikes were minted from 1879 to 1889, inclusive, the figure including a mere 1,500 coins in 1882. The entire 1,500 coins mintage was delivered on December 23, suggesting that the demand for these coins was for Christmas. An additional 76 proofs were struck throughout the year to meet collector demand. Two different reverse dies allow immediate identification. Circulation strikes have a repunched 2 in the date, while proofs have a normal 2. This near-Gem has a bold strike and satiny yellow-gold luster with reflective fields providing light contrast. A lovely example for the connoisseur. Population: 24 in 64 (2 in 64+), 13 finer (10/19).(Registry values: N4719)
