Description

1882 Three Dollar Gold, MS65+
Rare Deep Prooflike Specimen

1882 $3 MS65+ Deep Prooflike NGC. Only 1,500 business-strike three dollar gold pieces were struck in 1882, accompanied by a small mintage of 76 proof examples for collectors. The business-strikes were all delivered on December 23 and some may not have been distributed. The business-strikes have a boldly recut 2 in the date, making it easy to differentiate between the formats. Fortunately for collectors, the issue was heavily saved and examples in lower Mint State grades are reasonably available today. The issue is rare at the MS65 grade level, however, and finer coins are virtually unobtainable.

This Plus-graded Gem exhibits sharply detailed design elements and deeply reflective prooflike fields that contrast boldly with the frosty devices. The bright yellow-gold surfaces show no mentionable distractions and overall eye appeal is terrific. Census: 1 in 65+ Deep Prooflike, 0 finer (1/20).

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25N5, PCGS# 78004)
