1882 Three Dollar, MS66 ★ Prooflike
Finest at NGC, Splendid Appeal
1882 $3 MS66 ★ Prooflike NGC. CAC. Ex: Freedom Collection.
An obviously repunched 2 in the date confirms this coin's status as
a business strike. Well-struck, essentially untoned, and impeccably
preserved, this beautiful Premium Gem exhibits intense reflectivity
in the fields and considerable mint frost on the devices, producing
a noteworthy cameo effect on both sides. Some tiny chatter marks in
the field area directly beneath UNI are mint-made, non-distracting,
and irrelevant to the technical grade of the piece. Three coins
have achieved the MS66 grade level at NGC, this coin and two
others, but the others are non-Prooflike and lack the Star
designation (for outstanding eye appeal), making this piece the
finest-graded NGC example overall. Census: 1 in 66 (1 in 66
★ ) Prooflike, 0 finer (3/18).Ex: Orlando FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2007), lot 3470; Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2014), lot 4803, where it brought $38,187.50.
