    Gem 1883 Three Dollar Gold
Low-Mintage Issue, Even for the Series

1883 $3 MS65 PCGS. CAC. The 1883 three dollar gold pieces had a remarkably low mintage, even in a series that was noteworthy for tiny productions. The 900 circulation strikes produced for the 1883 puts it among only three issues in the series -- the 1881 and 1885 are the others -- that had sub-1,000-coin circulation strikes. (Of course, the 1875 and 1876 had no circulation strikes at all produced, being proof-only issues.) The surfaces on this piece display rich reddish-golden color and notable prooflikeness intermingled with some cartwheel effect in the fields. The strike is sharp throughout, and as expected of the grade there are no mentionable signs of contact. Population: 5 in 65, 2 finer (10/12). CAC Population: 2 in 65, none finer.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 25N6, PCGS# 8005)
